Roberto Pacheco
I was born in Porto Alegre, in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, son of a Polish mother and a gaucho father. But soon, I set off on a nomadic path through Brazil.
I’ve lived in Salvador, Brasília, Recife, Olinda, Fernando de Noronha, Mossoró, and Gravatá and have wandered through most of the country’s states.
Today, my home and studio are in Maracaípe, Pernambuco.
I am a clinical psychologist, with a master’s degree in anthropology, and a university professor.
My first book of poetry, Primeira Facada de Rita Vênus, was published in the 1980s.
Since then, I’ve written academic texts, short stories, and another book of poetry, É Isso Aí!.

I discovered sculpture ten years ago, while living in Gravatá, Pernambuco.
My love for trees and their woods, however, has much older roots. My Polish grandfather was a woodworker, and my father also worked with wood.

Background

Visual Arts
As part of my research into the techniques of parquetry, marquetry, and oshibana, I conducted workshops with Indigenous students and teachers in São Gabriel da Cachoeira, at the Federal Institute of Amazonas (IFAM) and at the school of the Duraka Indigenous Community, one of the islands along the Rio Negro.

Works created by the students during the workshops were exhibited at the headquarters of the Federation of Indigenous Organizations of the Rio Negro (FOIRN) in September 2023.
